Regulators are scrutinizing financial advisors intensely. The prospect of more heavy-handed and
rules-based regulation has never been greater. There are a number of current
issues which could significantly impact our ability to do business:
regulators are examining sales practices of segregated funds which could
result in securities-type regulation; MGAs are under greater scrutiny and the
current regulatory review may result in changes to the oversight of advisors;
commissions are under attack by governments in the US, UK and Australia and
have been banned in some cases, which could have negative implications for
Canada’s product distribution in the future. The debate on whether advisors
should adhere to a statutory fiduciary standard of care is well under way. With
these and many other regulatory initiatives on the horizon, it has never been
more important to have a positive relationship with the key decision makers
for our industry.
Yasir Naqvi is the Member of Provincial Parliament for Ottawa Center and is the Vice-Chair of
